Spiced Mulled Wine — festive and cozy, this quintessential holiday drink is packed with spices like cinnamon and cloves and a subtle fruitiness from the orange and cranberry. Perfect for a relaxing evening by the fire or winter get together, you can’t go wrong with this simple, yet delicious drink!
- 1 bottle (750 ml) red wine , any fruity red wine such as Merlot or Zinfandel
- 1/4 cup rum , or brandy (optional)
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 2 medium orange , sliced plus more for garnish
- 1 small apple , diced plus more for garnish
- 1/4 cup cranberries
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 star anise
- 4-6 cloves
-
Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan or pot.
-
Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. As soon as it reaches a simmer, reduce the heat to low and let it gently simmer for 15-20 minutes. Do not boil or the alcohol will burn off.
-
Remove the oranges, cranberries, apples, cinnamon sticks, star anise and cloves with a spoon or sieve. If you want a more intense flavor, you can leave them in for 30 minutes to an hour before taking them out.
-
Adjust the sweetness according to your taste.
-
Garnish with fruits of your choice and serve it warm. Enjoy!
- You can use your favorite liquor (rum, brandy) or leave it out completely if you want it less alcoholic.
- Don't boil the mixture otherwise it will burn off the alcohol.
